A Guide to Energy Efficient Air Conditioning

Air conditioning not only provides comfort, but it can even save lives during very hot climates. However, using aircon is sometimes frustrating because of increased electrical bills. One way of solving this inconvenience is to choose an energy efficient air con unit, which sufficiently cools indoor air without consuming too much electricity. Another way to achieve efficient air conditioning is to modify the air con unit and the room.

What Efficient Air conditioning Means

Air conditioning efficiency is measured by how air an air con unit cools the air compared to the power it uses. The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of the air con signifies how well it does its job. To get this value, the energy of the air con unit (in Btu’s) is divided by its power consumption in Watt-hours. The higher the EER, the more efficient the machine is. An EER of 9 and above is recommended for effective air-cooling in hot weather. This is usually indicated on the unit’s label or manual.

Weighing EER over Price

An air con unit with a high efficiency rate costs more than one with a medium to low rate because it is made with better quality materials. The high cost is said to be worth it since it greatly reduces electricity consumption, which results to a lower monthly electric bill. How Aircon Size Affects Energy Efficiency
